I phrasal verbs in ingkese sono importantissimi. Sì, hai presente quei verbi come look after, hurry up, go on oppure get off? Ecco, quelli! (Se hai bisogno di un ripasso veloce corri a leggere il nostro articolo sui phrasal verbs).
Sono importanti perché i parlanti inglesi li usano costantemente, anche negli scritti informali. Se non conosci i phrasal verbs inglesi rischi di non capire le persone che ti circondano. Per non parlare del fatto che il tuo inglese rischia di restare sempre un po’…. scolastico e innaturale ?

Sì perché On e Off non si limitano a significare acceso e spento in inglese, ma entrano anche nella formazione di tanti verbi frasali. I phrasal verbs nella lingua inglese
I phrasal verbs sono delle espressioni formate da un verbo ➕una preposizione oppure un avverbio (e talvolta tutte e due). Questi verbi così formati assumono poi un significato specifico.
Due sono le cose che devi imparare sui phrasal verbs:
1️⃣ Il loro significato non è la somma dei significati delle parole che li compongono. Per esempio Put off non significa *mettere spento. Significa rimandare, posporre.
2️⃣ Uno stesso phrasal verb può avere moltissimi significati: Take off può voler dire togliersi qualcosa di dosso ma anche decollare. ? Spesso devi cercare di intuire il senso dal contesto.
Allora come fare per imparare i phrasal verbs? Be’ i modi sono essenzialmente tre:
- Impararne a memoria un paio al giorno. In questo la nostra lista scaricabile dei phrasal verbs con On e Off può aiutarti.
- Guardare film e serie TV in lingua originale cercando di farci caso, e quando non ne conosci uno cercalo sul dizionario e annotalo.
- Leggere tanto.
I phrasal verbs sono formati da verbi molto comuni come take, get o make e con preposizioni e avverbi come in e out, oppure up and down.
In questo articolo ci occuperemo dei verbi frasali formati con On e Off. Ma cominciamo proprio da On Off: significato in italiano e usi (che non sono solo acceso / spento in inglese).
On in inglese: cos’è e cosa vuol dire?
?Innanzitutto diciamo che On è una preposizione, cioè una parola che indica dove o quando qualcosa è in relazione con qualcos’altro. Guarda queste frasi con On in inglese:
- The dish in on the table: la parola dish (piatto) è in relazione spaziale con la parola table (tavolo) perché la preposizione on ci dice che l’uno è sopra l’altro.
- My birthday is on July 3: qui la parola birthday (compleanno) è in una relazione di tempo con la data 3 luglio grazie alla preposizione On.
Quindi possiamo dire che On è una preposizione di luogo e di tempo.
On in italiano si traduce con sopra (una superficie), su. Altre frasi in inglese con on come preposizione di luogo:
- We hung the picture on the wall by the window (Abbiamo appeso il quadro al muro vicino alla finestra).
- They’ve built a new house on the site of the old one (Hanno costruito la nuova casa nello stesso posto della precedente).
- The article continues on page five (l’articolo continua a pagina 5).
- What’s on the menu? (cosa c’è nel menu)?
E poi, conoscerai forse l’espressione on the road, frase che in italiano si traduce con sulla strada o in viaggio.
Come preposizione di tempo ⌚, On si usa insieme a:
- Giorni della settimana: on Saturday.
- Orari del giorno usati con i giorni della settimana: on Sunday morning.
- Eventi annuali come compleanni e festività: on our anniversary.
- Date specifiche: on January 1
Ma on si usa anche per argomento (A book on Italian poetry); per una circostanza o condizione che ha una durata (I went on a trip to France while I was on holiday).
?On è anche un avverbio! E se osservi i significati dell’avverbio puoi comprendere meglio il significato di molti phrasal verbs con On. Guarda gli esempi:
- Sul corpo: Put your scarf on (Indossa la sciarpa).
- In funzionamento, acceso: Could you please turn on the lights? (Potresti accendere le luci?).
- Continuando, senza smettere: Read on to discover other phrasal verbs (Continua a leggere per scoprire altri phrasal verbs).
- Su un mezzo di trasporto: You must stamp your tickets before getting on the train (Devi timbrare il biglietto prima di salire sul treno).
- Avanti, oltre: Please move on and let other people in (Per favore, andate avanti e lasciate entrare altre persone).

Cosa vuol dire Off in inglese?
Come forse sai, l’avverbio e preposizione Off in italiano è collegata ai significati di spento, non funzionante:
- Make sure the lights are all off before you go home (verifica che le luci siano tutte spente prima di andare a casa).
Per questo forma phrasal verbs che significano spegnere come turn off, switch off.
?Ma off ha anche altri significati (che poi “presta” ai verbi frasali che forma):
- Via da un luogo, una posizione: Someone ran off with my bag (Qualcuno è scappato con la mia borsa).
- Si dice di qualcosa eliminato, tolto, rimosso: Take your hat off (Togliti il cappello).
- Assente: Take some time off (Prendi dei giorni di vacanza/assenza dal lavoro).
- Finito, esaurito: She paid off all her debts (Ha ripagato tutti i suoi debiti).
