In questo articolo ci occuperemo dei phrasal verbs formati con le preposizioni in & out, dentro e fuori in inglese. Si tratta di verbi molto comuni che davvero non puoi non sapere.
Qualche esempio di phrasal verb? Find out, scoprire. Ma anche look out, stare attenti. O give in, arrendersi. E un verbo che si usa tantissimo anche in italiano quando vai in vacanza: check in, registrarsi in un hotel o una casa vacanza. ?️

Nelle righe che seguono scopriremo innanzitutto cosa sono i phrasal verbs e perché sono importanti, poi ci occuperemo delle preposizioni in & out, dentro e fuori in inglese, per scoprire poi i phrasal verbs che si formano sia con in che con out, quelli che si formano solo con In e quelli solo con Out.
Cominciamo! ?
Phrasal verbs in breve: cosa sono e perché devi impararli
Sapevi che esistono migliaia di phrasal verbs nella lingua inglese? Keep calm, non devi impararli tutti, solo i più importanti e forse già ne conosci più di quanto pensi ! ?
Un verbo frasale è composto da un verbo – di solito molto comune, come make, get, take – e da una particella, come in e out, up e down.
Alcuni phrasal verbs hanno due particelle, ad esempio look out for (fare attenzione).
Queste espressioni sembrano facili… in fondo sono solo un verbo comune seguito da un’altra parolina. Ma quella “parolina” di solito cambia il significato del verbo, e qui il gioco si fa duro. Sì perché il significato di un phrasal verb è spesso impossibile da indovinare dalle singole parole. Quindi devi studiarli a memoria oppure comprendere il senso dal contesto. Guarda l’esempio di stand out:
stand ? stare in piedi
out ?fuori
stand ➕out ? emergere, farsi notare
non ❌ stare in piedi fuori

Cosa significa In?
In è una preposizione di tempo e di luogo. Ora ci interessa soprattutto nel suo significato di dentro in inglese perché è in questa accezione che va a formare i phrasal verbs.
?Quindi In vuol dire all’interno di un contenitore, un ambiente, un luogo, o un’area, oppure circondato o chiuso da qualcosa. Ecco qualche esempio:
- We got stuck in traffic jam for two hours (Siamo rimasti bloccati nel traffico per due ore).
- Jane lives in Paris, in a beautiful old building. (Vive Parigi in una bella casa antica).
- I have a pain in my leg (Ho un dolore a una gamba).
Cosa significa Out?
Come parte del discorso, Out può essere un avverbio o una preposizione e, in parole povere, significa fuori in inglese. Questo fuori inglese, però, può avere varie sfumature di significato, che non si riferiscono solo allo spazio ma anche al tempo. Vediamo quali. ?
Movimento da dentro a fuori
Out può rendere il significato di qualcosa o qualcuno che parte dall’interno per andare verso fuori. Per esempio estrarre, nel senso di tirare fuori, in inglese si dice pull out. Altri esempi
- Bottle broke and water came out (la bottiglia si è rotta e l’acqua è uscita fuori).
- Lean out the window and see (sporgiti dalla finestra e guarda).
All’esterno di
Out può significare fuori da una stanza, un edificio o all’aperto: ?
- Just wait out here, we’ll call you when it’s your turn (Aspetta qui fuori, ti chiameremo quando tocca a te: fuori da una stanza)
- I feel like eating out tonight (Mi va di mangiare fuori : fuori di casa)
Va aggiunta a queste frasi Out of office (spesso abbreviata in OOO), espressione che si usa per dire che qualcuno non è in ufficio perché è in vacanza o ha preso una giornata libera.
Non più in uso, non più in attività
Un altro significato importante di out riguarda l’essere fuori da un’attività, non essere più attuale o in corso, essere passato, essere fuori moda e simili. ? Alcuni esempi:
- Fuori servizio in inglese: out of order
- Fuori produzione in inglese: out of production
- Fuori corso in inglese (di moneta) out of currency
- Fuori moda in inglese: out of date, out of fashion
- Fuori dalla circolazione (che non si vede più): out of circulation
In pubblico, a tutti, davanti a tutti
Infine si usa out per dire che qualcosa è uscito per essere visto, letto, comprato dal pubblico, oppure che è diventato di pubblico dominio cioè saputo o conosciuto da tutti, a disposizione di tutti. ?️
- Taylor Swift’s latest song is out everywhere (l’ultima canzone di Taylor Swift è uscita su tutte le piattaforme).
- The teacher gave out notebooks to all the students (La maestra ha distribuito i quaderni a tutti gli allievi).
Out rafforzativo
Spesso, soprattutto nei verbi frasali, out è usato per rafforzare il significato della parola a cui è associato:
- We have been at work all day, and now we are tired out (Abbiamo lavorato tutto il giorno e ora siamo stanchissimi)
- When she saw the thief, Laura cried out in panic (Quando vide il ladro Laura gridò forte, in preda al panico).
?In conclusione possiamo dire che i verbi frasali con out contengono un significato relativo al fuori (da oggetto, un edificio o all’aperto) o in pubblico o sono rafforzativi del verbo principale (cry >> cry out).
